In PRK the epithelium (top layer of the cornea) is scraped off and then the laser treatment is applied. A contact lens is used as a “bandage” to decrease discomfort. The epithelium then grows back over the bare area during the next few days. In LASEK the epithelium is exposed to 20% alcohol which helps separate epithelium from the cornea. The epithelium is pushed to one side and laser treatment applied. The epithelial layer is replaced back onto the eye and held in place with a contact lens. The contact lens is then removed a few days later. LASEK is hence a “no knife”/flap operation. Epi-Lasik is a smilar procedure that uses a keratome like that used for Lasik, but engineered to only separate the epithelium. When considering any type of surgery, it’s important to consider the risks versus the reward, the pros and cons, and the advantages and disadvantages. This is true of LASIK eye surgery as well. Only by seeing the big picture can you make the best decision.
So what are some of the advantages of LASIK eye surgery?
1. History of Success
LASIK has a history of good success rates. By “success rate,” I am referring to surgeries that result in corrected version. Approximately 80% of LASIK surgery patients achieve the level of vision they want. This is a major advantage of having LASIK.
2. Less Pain
In most cases, LASIK laser eye surgeries are less painful than other types of eye surgery (such as the photorefractive keratectomy or PRK). In fact, there is typically not much pain associated with LASIK surgery at all.
Obviously this is a big advantage of LASIK surgery, especially when combined with the success rate of LASIK surgery. Any time you can reduce the amount of pain associated with a surgery while keeping the benefits, you’ve found something worth looking into.
3. Relatively Quick Results
With LASIK laser eye surgery, vision correction usually takes place immediately following the surgery, or by the next day. Vision is obviously a big part of our lives, so quick results from an eye surgery can be a major benefit.
4. Quick Recovery
LASIK typically produces quick results, and the recovery time is also fast (when compared to other types of eye surgery). In most cases, LASIK eye surgery requires no stitches or bandages, so recovery time is shortened.
5. No More Glasses
Arguably the biggest benefit of LASIK laser eye surgery is that it corrects vision to the point that patients no longer need glasses or contact lenses. This is a quality-of-life benefit that leads a lot of people to choose LASIK in the first place.

LASIK is by far the most prevalent and safest refractive surgery procedure. It has been employed to treat a host of visual anomalies. Since it’s a surgery, people often harbor a false belief that LASIK is a painful procedure. In fact, LASIK is a relatively painless technique, and what the patient experiences during and after the surgery can be categorized as mild discomfort rather than pain.
LASIK is performed with the patient awake and mobile, and this certainly corroborates that the operation is relatively painless. The surgeon typically administers a mild sedative (for instance Valium) and anesthetic eye drops. LASIK involves creation of a flap of corneal tissue. This hinged flap may be created with a microkeratome (a surgical blade) or a femtosecond laser. During this initial step of flap formation, the patient may experience a little bit of pressure on the eye.
In the following step, the flap is folded back to reveal the middle section of the cornea, in order to make way for precise ablation by the excimer laser. Then the flap is repositioned to allow natural healing. Upon completion of the surgery, the patient may experience discomfort, scratchiness and irritation, akin to the sensation of wearing an uncomfortable contact lens. Such irritable sensation can be soothed with the aid of eye drops, and it normally wears off within a few hours after surgery.
Since the laser ablation is performed the middle section of the cornea and under the LASIK flap, the cornea does not register the fact that it has been surgically operated. As the wound response is subdued, the patient experiences speedy visual recovery and almost no pain.
However, as with any surgery, LASIK has associated complications that may force the patient to bear greater discomfort after surgery. A few of such nagging complications include dry eyes, visual acuity fluctuation, halos or starbursts around light sources at night, double vision, light sensitivity, and several flap related problems.
All in all, LASIK is a safe and efficacious procedure, which is virtually painless. Though the patient may experience mild discomfort due to potential complications, the complication rate itself is quite meager. If presented with the question of whether LASIK hurts or not, I would certainly say that it’s a painless procedure.
